Blood & Fire CD: Disc 2: This incredible album has achieved legendary status in the history of reggae, and with good reason. With some of Jamaica's greatest voices and musicians behind it, this is roots reggae at its earthiest, Rasta music at its dreadest, Lee Perry's Black Ark at its finest. Scratch's production is magnificent on these wonderful Biblical epics that resonate with a righteous wisdom. Perhaps no other album in reggae has had such a checkered past: originally released in limited numbers on Black Art in 1977, the album was then drastically remixed by Lee Perry and re-released on Black Art in 1978. All subsequent releases have more or less used the second Black Art pressing, but with varying degrees of quality and length. After years of inferior vinyl versions floating around, in 1996 Blood & Fire re-released the definitive version of this album on CD and limited edition LP, cleaner and longer than all previous releases. Blood & Fire's amazing packaging makes you think that you're buying more than an album - you're buying a piece of history (if you can find it, get the LP version so that the amazing art can be better appreciated). Highlights include the pulsing "At The Feast", the stunning "Children Crying", and the hypnotic "Congoman". The second CD of 12" mixes and dubs is a wonderful bonus to this already stunning release. Essential listening. |
