RETURN OF WAX - THE UPSETTERS LP: DIP DLP6001 CD: Justice League JLCD5003 1975 |
Along with Musical Bones and Kung Fu Meets The Dragon, Return Of Wax makes up an instrumental trilogy that Scratch recorded in 1975. While Musical Bones is laid back, jazz-inspired reggae and Kung Fu is upsetting instrumental madness, Return Of Wax is kind of in the middle, with elements of the other two albums in the mix. The music has some minimal dub touches and definitely captures the early Black Ark sound. Overall, the mood is funky yet dread: think of it as the soundtrack to a 1970s Jamaican cop show that never was. The CD re-release is certainly worth seeking out for two bonus tracks: the jazzy, melancholy "Different Experience" and Keith Rowe's wonderful "Living My Life".
