While there are certainly some great tunes on this collection, the confusing track listing on Essential Lee Perry makes for a decidedly uneven experience. The choice of material is all over the map, and the inclusion of weaker tunes such as "Picture On The Wall" and "Sexy Natty" is simply puzzling. With a different track order and a bit of gardening, this could be a winner. Not as essential as the title suggests, but still a very good collection.
